REBUILDING THE ENGINE

Baine and the boys spent Spring Break rebuilding the engine in the F350. Remember the ambulance that Baine brought home a few months ago. Well, they took the engine out of that, rebuilt it and put it in the F350 and it actually RUNS! They can do anything.....

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

We had a wonderful Christmas at home in Cookeville. The kids have been out of school since Tuesday and I have had four days off in a row. It has been a great time. We went to see the lights in Lebanon on Saturday night, 8 acres of lights,music and lots and lots of cars. It was a sight, and who would have thought that our dear friends in Orlando would have to tell us about it?! Thanks Tommy and Shirley, I have posted a few pictures but next year you will have to make the trip. Christmas day was a blast, though we missed having my brother's family this year, maybe next year we can all be together. The kids really scored big....the older they get the more expensive the gifts get....I think that they all may need to get jobs soon. From stereos to diamond earrings....everyone was happy...but most of all me, because I got a new camera...and I do love to take pictures.

Merry Christmas Grandma!
Mom was gone for a week and as soon as she left....we started the project. Baine worked hard while we were at work and school to make sure the job would be finished when she returned on Sunday. It turned out awesome and she loved it. It was alot of work, it is a good thing we have a builder in this family!

IT REALLY DID FOLLOW ME HOME.....
Baine needed an engine for the F350 and finally found one in Douglasville.....So, off he went and not only did he bring home an engine....He brought home the entire ambulance. He will take it to Hilham tomorrow to remove the engine and scrap the body. Right Dear?!

We had a busy weekend with lots of visitors. Mark, Cindy, Danielle and Mark Clifton came up from Valdosta for the closing night of Snow White and then headed to West Virginia for Thanksgiving. Papa, Nanny and EE came up from Atlanta to catch the last showing of Jordan's play. It was a great show. We even had Grandma's friend Jean here for the weekend. It was a fun time for all.

So...today is Baine's 40th birthday and I took the day off to go to with him to an equipment auction in Nashville. He was in heaven and thinks that all men should go to an equipment auction on their birthdays with money and a wife that does not mind....I guess he is dreaming again. We had a great visit with the cousins. My brother and his 5 kids came up for the long holiday weekend and we had fun swimming, picnicing, and playing football. Hopefully, Aunt Alison can come up with them next time and we can do something girly......like SHOPPING!

FROM CROSS COUNTRY RACES TO FOOTBALL GAMES

We started our Saturday morning with a 6:30AM arrival at the high school, so that Jordan could get on the bus for her cross country meet. Then we all loaded up in the car and headed that way to make it in time for a 9:30AM run. She did great placing 30th out of about 150 girls. After three hours at the meet and about 10 bottles of water we headed out for another two hour drive to make it in time for Jeremiah's 3:00PM weigh-in for a football game. It was also a great game....they lost but Jeremiah was on his A game today. We made it home about 9PM tonight and everyone was ready for bed. Jacob has two football games next week, Jordan has a cross country meet and Jeremiah has a game on Saturday.....It will be another busy week.

A VISIT FROM THE ROMERO FAMILY
It was a grand family reuninon. We have not seen the Romero family since we left Julian California and it was great to see them. It was like we were never apart. The kids jumped right into their old routine, Guillermo and Baine talked for hours and Carina started cooking for us....Just like old times but without the RV. We will be sad to see them go tomorrow but revel in the fact that they will be only a days drive away. We are already planning a trip for October.

Hickory Lane

The painters started on the cabin Saturday morning and by Sunday after church they were almost complete. It looks great and as soon as the doors dry I will get a picture from the front. Baine and I also celebrated our 17 year anniversary this weekend. We enjoyed dinner out with the kids and bought the famiy a membership at the YMCA for an anniversary gift.

BRING IN THE PAINTERS

The outside of the first cabin is finally complete. Baine had to hire some helpers since his helpers went back to school and boy were they quick. The painters will be in on Thursday to put the finishing touches on the outside. The rough in plumbing and electrical is almost finished also. We are moving right along.

Jordan and Jacob are going to Cookeville High this year and Jeremiah is at the middle school. They are all playing sports and Jordan and Jeremiah are about to audition for Cookeville Children's Theatre. It is going to be a busy fall.

WILD KINGDOM

Yes, that is a bird on Jordan's shoulder. Last week Baine and I went on a walk and found a baby fird in the middle of the road. We tried to find the nest but had no success. So, home the bird went....and every two hours throughout the day he has to be fed a special formula made by Jordan (boiled eggs, cat food, apple sauce and bird vitamins all blended together in the blender) Thank goodness he sleeps all night.

THE JACKSON'S CABIN

Well, it is finally painted and boy does it look great. The painters worked on the Spence Lane cabin for about 4 days and finally finished yesterday afternoon, just in time for Tommy's visit. Now he and Baine are working on the back deck. I think Tommy will need a vacation from his vacation after this week. We miss you Shirley.

We took a road trip to Valdosta Georgia for the 4th of July Holiday. There was a family reunion with lots of family, food and fun. We then packed up the car and brought Grandma home with us to stay....We are glad to have her here.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JORDAN!

We had a wonderful party last night for Jordan's 16th birthday. We were so excited to have Baine's sister and her girls here to help us celebrate. Aunt Cathy was busy almost from the minute she and the girls arrived. It was great to have her here to help. We had lots of fun dancing the night away and eating Baine's yummy chicken wings. We can hardly believe that she is sixteen.

I finally made it out to the building site this afternoon. I have not been out since Saturday and I wanted to see the windows. They look great and the window that Baine added to the plans looks fabulous. I was even able to help out while I was there.

Happy Fathers Day
We got to sleep in this morning to celebrate the sixteen years Dad has been our dad. After mom made us pancakes, we headed to Lowes where Dad picked out the cordless drill he wanted. The boys and I washed dad's truck and got him an eight ball knob for his gear changer. We ate lunch at a pizza shop where we ran into "Snoop Dogg", and now mom has been singing "Gin and Juice" all day and we think she's been smoking something. This slideshow will explain that.....

It was a trying weekend. Lots of geometry equations and heavy lifting, while we were 15 feet in the air. We will all be glad to get the roof finished.

Not much accomplished for today but Baine and the boys have been busy all week. The deck is looking great and the floor joist for the loft are all in now. We are hoping to get the rafters in this weekend. Dad was short helpers this week but he and Jeremiah had fun on the property today, or at least Jeremiah did. We got some much needed rain which caused the turtles to come out into the road and Smooty saved the day or at least the turtle.

Baine and the boys have been working over the last couple of days to get the mud sill, and floor together and it is looking good. We will be framing up walls tomorrow and then on to the roof. Grandma and her friend Jackie are here visiting so we went to Cracker Barrel for dinner and Jordan and Jeremiah got two of the world's largest suckers.

We are well on our way to framing the first cabin in the new development. We spent 13 hours on the property yesterday and made alot of progress. Baine took Jordan out for a date last night in Cookeville. They both got all dressed up and went to a local "fancy" restaurant. Jordan got a new dress and shoes for the event and Dad got to wear his dress clothes fresh from the cleaners!

Grandma's House

We are all so excited that Grandma has bought a house just 40 minutes away from us. She is not quite ready to move yet so we will be taking care of it(and enjoying it, of course) while she waits for just the right time to move. We are hoping for sooner rather than later. We spent the weekend working in the yard and boy did it look good when we were finished. The males in my family will just have to remember that we are in a neighborhood and folks might not take to kindly to them using the bathroom at the nearest tree.

Bring the Hot Dogs, I gots the Fire

And then some! One small burn pile plus an unexpected wind equals one fire gone wild. I was working down at the burn pile, and the wind picked up. It blew for a few minutes, so I decided to go up and take a look at the upper hill. When I got clear of the smoke from the lower fire I could see that the upper hill was ablaze. I dropped the chainsaw, ran like hell to the truck, grabbed the McCloud and water can, ran like hell again, and started fighting my screw-up! I worked it from one side while the other side burned like crazy. The fire was popping and hissing, and I could hear it roar when it really started taking off. The wind shifted and blew smoke right on top of me and nearly choked me to death. My eyes burned, I couldn't breathe, I gagged from the smoke, and I never knew that humans could make so much mucous.

I fought it alone for about 20 minutes and I realized that I was outnumbered, so I called 911. The local Volunteer Firefighters were there in about 15 minutes, and I was glad to see them. They put the water cannons on it and had it under control in 10-15 minutes.

Smooty asked me where the flames were in the pictures, and I had to explain to him that I didn't think it would have been appropriate to snap a few cool flame shots while the whole damn knob was burning.

Well, we are at it again. This time we are working on the 17 acre piece of property off Hickory Lane. The Old Timers call it Grapevine Ridge, so respectfully we named our cabin development the same. The property is really amazing. The more we clear and open it up, the more we see a diamond in the rough. The views are million dollar, that would be nice, and there are two creeks (springs). I walked the North and West sides of the property and found a t least ten more lots to be developed. I will need to get a small bulldozer to continue our new road. The local guys are pretty tough on trees and land when they bulldoze. These pictures are from Friday when Patrice and the kids and I cleared brush and trees from Lot 1. They are on Spring Break, so I figured I could get the old crew together because I could use some extra help. After working on the 5 acres on Spence Lane last Spring, Patrice and the kids tore through the first lot on Hickory. I could barely cut fast enough.

We have cut in a new road that wraps around to the south side that reveals the views that you may see in some of the pictures, but trust me you can't appreciate it completely unless you're standing here with us taking it all in. We have been trying to decide on a name for the road, but nothing yet. This is our first actual road, so it is a significant milestone for us, therefore the name should reflect this.

In naming the project Patrice was absolutely sure about using "Grapevine". Last week while I was looking through the tax maps of the area I noticed that the old road name was Grapevine Ridge, but somehow had been changed to Hickory Ln. From this we named the project "Grapevine Ridge Cabin Community". A local sign shop is making the property sign for us, and when I saw the proof for the sign I was struck by the words "Cabin Community".

It has been a very hard 12 months for us as a family. The uncertainty, the money, the sweltering heat of Summer, the ticks, the sharp chainsaw against my damn knee, the rain on our concrete, my terrible temper and equally terrible mouth, the biting cold of winter, cold showers, hauling wood for the stove, splitting and cutting wood, teenagers without reason, waking up to 19 degrees outside and 24 degrees inside, seeing our breath while lying on the floor, sleeping by the wood stove to feed it fuel every 3 hours and waking up 6 hours later only to find glowing coals, going to bed fully clothed, the desolation, the crying, the fighting, the fractured egos and marriage.

"Cabin Community",huh. You're damn right! As I have read somewhere and find it appropriate to share here, "We have done so much with so little for so long, that today we can do almost anything with absolutely nothing".

I thank God for adventure, entrepreneurship, America, friends, and most of all an amazing wife and kids.

MEET THE JACKSON'S

Tommy and Shirley are the official new owners of our first cabin and they are like family already. They came up for the weekend (they live in Central Florida) after closing on Friday afternoon and we had a great time showing them the sights and just sitting around the cabin and visiting. We know that they will love and enjoy the cabin as much as we have enjoyed building it.

We were all surprised to see this sign out in front of the school on Friday afternoon. It is a privilege that is usually reserved for the family names that have been in this area for the last two centuries. His science teacher recommended him and the administration approved it. We are so proud of him.

Merry Christmas!

We are having a wonderful time in Pigeon Forge with Grandma, my brother and his family. There are 13 of us in all and the kids are having a great time with their cousins. My mother is in heaven, this is her dream Christmas (having us all together.) We have especially enjoyed the younger children since our guys are almost all teenagers. Notice the look on Baine's face and the position of his hands when our three year old nephew decided he was a Karate master.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Well, we are finally out of the 17th century. My husband, the electrician, passed the temporary pole inspection and the rough-in inspection with flying colors and on the first attempt, too! We are all enjoying hot showers and power without a generator. The power company showed up on Wednesday to put in the transformer and hook-up our temporary pole. Baine spent all of Tuesday digging the 4 foot deep and 2 foot wide trench with the kids close at hand, armed with shovels. Thanksgiving was a great success with lots of good food (mostly cooked on the woodstove) and good company. Baine also got to fly the neighbor's Cessna 150 and we got a good Turkey day fly-by and the boys were pumped. Lots of pictures from the last week or so. Enjoy.

The wood stove turned out great. Baine did a great job on the hearth and the fuel is plentiful.. just out the front door. The second floor or the ceiling for the first floor (depending on where you are standing)is almost complete and it looks great as well. The leaves are almost gone off the trees now but last the last few weeks have been blazing with the color changes. This picture is on the road out in front of the cabin and this hammock has been wonderful for just enjoying this great piece of property.

Moving Along

Fascia, house wrap, windows, and a metal roof have kept us busy over the past week.

We went to a local company to pick out our metal roof. We expected the standard roof colors as options, but the owner, Dave, took me in the warehouse and showed me a copper painted roof that we really liked. We took small samples and showed them to all the folks up at the General Store, and everyone approved of the copper, so we bought it, and as it goes up it looks great!

The Vernon Community

We finally got the front gable end sheeted and all the sheeting on the roof. Progress will slow down a bit because we are running kids to and from school and sporting activities, but they tell us each morning what they would like to see finished when they return home from school..

SCHOOL DAYS

That's right. The kids started school on Thursday, July 27th. This is the first time ever that they have all been in school at one time. I think our homeschooling days are officially over at least until we decide to sail around the world or something crazy like that. (notice that our 13 year old is officially taller than the 15 year old and this drives her crazy)
